horn of the wind
a giant musical instrument played by the wind

The horn song steps is a sound sculpture that works with the kinetic energy of the wind and the visitors to create a harmonic song. Inside the pipes of the giant horn-like form a staircase lifts visitors up to hear the changing sound of the wind. As they climb up, their steps tap the pipes to create a kinetic tune with an ever-changing rhythm. The dynamism of the spiralling form is brought to life by the visitor’s movement as they enjoy the music they create themselves for free by the energy of the wind.

Astana Future Energy Expo is as much about the energy of people as it is about the energy of the earth. The legible symbolic form of the spiralling horn has been designed to capture the imagination and the attention of the visitors from afar, its dynamic shape making a contrast to the platonic form of the urban context. The spiralling form beckons visitors closer as they start to hear the horn song steps’ haunting humming tune. From a distance the dynamic movement of people climbing the steps animates the artwork. Up close, visitors start to engage with the musical properties of the piece and experience the energy of the wind and the energy of the people.
