A Tree in a Well
OLD STREET TUBE STATION PROPOSAL, 2006
out of the old well grows a glowing tree
light pours into the tube station below
On the border of Islington and Hackney, at the site of the old St. Agnes Well, a new lightwell
is made. A tree rises from the well and creates a canopy, over which a lightbox rests. The
glowing tree marks the gateway to the new Old Street tube station below.
The transport hub becomes a new social hub, by reclaiming the traffic roundabout; sunny but
crime-ridden and dominated by vent shafts. Public realm is created both above and below
ground. The proposed centralised tube entrance brings legibility, safety, natural cooling and
lighting to the concourse, and acts as a beacon for the greater urban area linking to
Shoreditch and its night-time economy.
