After graduating from Smith College with a liberal arts degree, Anna worked in New York, Tokyo, and Los Angeles, before completing her Master of Architecture at Columbia University. On arriving in London in 1997 she worked for Arup Associates and taught as a diploma unit tutor at the University of North London. She qualified as an architect in 2001, and set up Tonkin Liu with Mike Tonkin. Together they have taught for three years at the Architectural Association School of Architecture.

Having received a first class honours degree from Leeds School of Architecture, he completed a Master's degree at the Royal College of Art and qualified as an Architect in 1989. After working for Nigel Coates and Eva Jiricna in Japan and London, he spent several years traveling and studying before settling in Hong Kong. Tonkin Design in Hong Kong undertook projects in Austria, Indonesia, England, Thailand, and Hong Kong. He returned to England in 1997 and set up practice.
